Elvis Wigs and PompadoursIn the early days of rock and roll music there were many influences that musicians drew from. Soulful gospel and Mississippi delta blues were major roots. These were, after all, what alot of musicians grew up listening too and hearing everyday. Simple chords and lyrics about struggle and social discomfort seemed to resonate with these young song writers. The birth of rock and roll was an evolution from these simple and purely American roots. The sound that many thought would never last not only swept the music world but became the anthem for a hungry changing nation seeking answers and social change. A rebellion of sorts through music and peaceful gatherings that began in small country venues and county fairs. America's youth grabbed onto the movement and propelled it into a cultural phenomenon. Launched from simple backgrounds into the new media of television which reached millions and attracted accusations of demonic sexual content. Controversy only added fuel to the fire and gave the new music front page notoriety. Anything so controversial had to be explored and seen for ones self. By the late 1950's all the ground work had been laid and the fuse was about to be lit. Musicians and song writers quickly became stage events and did not disappoint their fans nor their critics. Always decked out in brightly fashioned clothes with alluring gyrating hips the stage performance became a major part of early rock and roll. And along with the throngs of young audience members came the warnings of social degradation and satanic predation. Picking up even more speed and media attention rock and roll music was driven higher and higher in popularity. Empowered by the very criticism meant to curb it's popularity it burst into the 1960's with a fervor never seen before. From simple beginnings came the music that changed a generation and world they came to inherit. |
