General Fit & Sizing Information

Hats: Whether you select a hat to protect yourself from the elements or to improve your image, fit is important.

How do I measure my head for fit?
1) Most heads get progressively larger in circumference to a point, then drop smaller.

2) One key to fitting is to measure this largest head circumference with a soft measuring tape positioned comfortably high on the brow. This measurement will be the position that the hat's inner band will hug on the head. I personally like about a finger's width between my hat's bottom crown edge and the top of my ear. I also like about 2 to 2½ fingers width from the top of my eyebrows to the hat's bottom crown edge.

3) Pull the measuring tape comfortably snug on the largest head circumference . This measurement simulates the hat's inner band fit to your head and determines the hat size. Hold the tape's circumference measurement steady. Then rotate the tape slightly higher on the brow and lower on the rear of the head. You might wear the hat in this position when kicked back and relaxing. In this position, the wind will blow it off, but there will be no "red line" on your brow. Next, still holding the tape measurement steady, pull the tape low on your brow while leaving the rear of the tape just above the kicked back position. The result should be a fit tight enough to keep your hat on while the wind is blowing, or while you ride your horse. Wearing your hat in "pulled down" position will create a "red line" on your brow. You must decide how tight is tight and how loose is loose. Compromise on a good overall fit and compare to the hat size conversion chart for size.

4) Remember, a low crown hat can touch the top of your head when it reaches "pulled down" position. This is not necessarily bad, but if the top of your head is sensitive buy a medium height crown.

Crown Heights Low= 4" to 5" Med= 5" to 6" High= 6" to 7"

5) A hat must fit the shape of your head as well as the circumference. Head shapes usually fall into categories: Round Oval , Long Oval , Egg Shaped Oval , (most common) and Square Brow . As silly as it seems, have a friend look at the top of your head to tell you your general shape. Or look into a well worn hat to see your head shape. Most hats can be steamed to move the crown shape to match your head shape. This will help break in the hat.
